Transpersonal Group Psychotherapy

John Frederick Hiatt, M.D., Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, UCSF School of Medicine, San Francisco, California

An overview of transpersonal psychiatry and the theoretical underpinnings of the approach will be presented. There will be an experiential group in the initial session and a discussion of attendees' specific experiences. We will discuss how this fits with, enhances, and differs from traditional group psychotherapy.

Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
1. Describe the assumptions in transpersonal psychiatry.
2. Describe how transpersonal groups differ from traditional group psychotherapy.
3. List the types of persons for whom this approach is and is not appropriate.
4. Differentiate between spiritual events and psychopathology.
