A Trip Around the Umbrella, the Apache (The Native American) and the Mermaid: The Use of the Mexican Lotto ("Loteria Mexicana") in the Group Therapy Process

 

Presenter:        

Jose Cherbowsky, Ph.D., Marriage and Family Counselor, San Diego, California and Tijuana, Mexico

 

The following work explains how the images of the Mexican Lotto, which are impregnated in the collective consciousness of the Mexican-American culture, can be used as a privileged tool in group therapy to deepen not only each participant's own process but the group's process as well.

 

Learning Objectives:

The attendees will be able to:

1. Present theoretical and practical considerations about the use of the Mexican lotto, in addition to some clinical vignettes of a therapy group. The  group is composed of clients living in both sides of the border, San Diego and Tijuana.

2. Integrate the Mexican lotto images as a creative tool to enhance the group therapy process.

3. Analyze the Mexican lotto images from the perspective of the collective consciousness of the Mexican-American culture.
